During April and May 2016, a joint IODP - ICDP [79] [80] Mission Specific Platform Expedition no. 364 obtained the first offshore core samples from the peak ring, surrounding the central zone of the crater. [81] This is a radar image of the southwest portion of the buried Chicxulub impact crater in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The radar image was acquired on orbit 81 of space shuttle Endeavour on April 14, 1994 by the Spaceborne Imaging Radar C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR). After the colossal impact that created the Chicxulub crater, Earth’s surface was pretty much uninhabitable.
